An exciting development in staffing and recruiting is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly ChatGPT. What’s fascinating about ChatGPT is its ability to interpret and generate human-like text, which is changing how organizations handle the hiring process.
However, we’ve observed that though ChatGPT has gone viral, few people seem to have a handle on how to use it effectively. The purpose of this blog series is to cut through the noise and make it easy to use ChatGPT to increase efficiency and output while recruiting.
Utilizing ChatGPT to Screen Candidates
ChatGPT improves the process of screening candidates in multiple ways. In this section, I’ll present you with FIVE situations where ChatGPT can significantly expedite and enhance the talent screening process. Plus, I’ve got a step-by-step guide coming up in the next section, so you can try it out yourself!
Analyzing Resumes
When candidates send in their resumes, instead of recruiters having to go through each resume one by one, ChatGPT can do the heavy lifting for you. It helps analyze resumes and screen candidates by using natural language understanding to extract relevant data and organizes it for easy reference.
Identifying Relevant Experience
ChatGPT’s contextual understanding capabilities can figure out a candidate’s relevant work experience by comparing their job history with the specific requirements of our open position. It’s like having a handy hiring assistant! So, when ChatGPT analyzes the job description and understands the qualifications you’re looking for, it can point you in the direction of candidates whose previous roles closely align with what you need.
Identifying Relevant Skills
Having trouble understanding niche skillsets and finding candidates with matching skills in all those resumes? Thanks to its advanced AI capabilities, ChatGPT can identify and comprehend relevant skills in candidates’ resumes and match them with the job description.
Providing Context
ChatGPT is like having a reliable teammate for recruiters. It provides them with essential context from resumes, giving them valuable insights into how a candidate’s background aligns with your organization’s needs. With this extra help, recruiters can make well-informed decisions and find the best matches for your company.
Ranking Resumes
ChatGPT can help recruiters prioritize resumes quickly, based on how well they match the job requirements. This comes in handy, especially when there’s a large pool of candidates to handle. By using the ranking system, recruiters can focus their attention on the top-ranking candidates who are the most suitable for the job. It’s a practical tool that makes the evaluation process more efficient and effective, without overwhelming your team.
Step-By-Step How-To Guide to Use ChatGPT for Screening
Step One: Understand the Job
The first step to finding the right candidate is understanding the role, and this is where ChatGPT shines. Just log into ChatGPT, copy paste the job description into the chat feature, and ask it to explain the role to you in layman’s terms. ChatGPT will respond with an easy-to-understand explanation, which will help you identify the right candidates for the role. If you need more clarification, ask ChatGPT for the specific information you need. Save the explanation for the next time you get a similar role to work on. The questions that you ask ChatGPT are called “prompts”, and the more specific the prompt, the better the answer from ChatGPT.
Here’s how you can go about this: Prompt: Explain this to me in layman’s terms – (copy-paste job description) ChatGPT: Gives an explanation that has some technical terms that you don’t understand. Prompt: Explain it again, in simple English and don’t use jargon
You can keep asking it for more explanations until you understand everything.
Note – It’s best not to use ChatGPT to form Boolean strings, as it doesn’t create them very well and makes basic errors.
Step Two: Upload and Rank Resumes Now you’ve understood the role, so you can source candidates and you find a bunch of resumes that are decent fits. Upload the resumes into the same chat that contained the job description and ask ChatGPT to rank the resumes based on their suitability to the job description, with 1 being the best fit.
By doing this, ChatGPT will analyze each resume, and align the candidates’ skills, experiences, and qualifications with the job requirements. This ranking system is an invaluable tool, especially when dealing with a large pool of candidates. It saves your recruiters precious time and effort, ensuring they focus their attention on the top-ranked candidates.
Step Three: Analyze Resumes Ask ChatGPT to provide a detailed list of pros and cons for the top five resumes based on the job description.
The insights you gain from ChatGPT’s analysis provides clarity. The well-structured breakdown of each candidate’s strengths (pros) and potential limitations (cons) allows for a clearer and more objective understanding of their suitability for the position. A huge benefit of this is that it eliminates bias, since the analysis is being done purely based on suitability for the job, and nothing else.
Step Four: Create Candidate Summary Once you’ve locked the candidate and are ready to submit him/her for the role, ask ChatGPT to create a candidate summary using their pros. We all know the importance of a strong candidate summary while submitting candidates – it’s often the difference between the hiring manager checking the resume or passing to the next one. This process is quick and effective, giving your candidates the best possible chance of getting shortlisted.
Upgrade to AI-Driven Candidate Screening iPlace recruiters’ use of ChatGPT has been a win-win for our clients and candidates. It has enabled us to find the best talent faster without getting overwhelmed by the magnitude and scale of the candidate pool or the difficulty of finding candidates with niche skills. It has allowed our recruiters to focus their energy on the high-value tasks – building relationships with candidates and clients, conducting interviews, and gathering insights. As a result, we provide our clients with the best talent and a smoother and faster recruitment process.
“But does ChatGPT really work? Or is it just another tech fad?”
Let’s put it this way – ChatGPT is not a substitute for thinking. ChatGPT can be seen as a “great power.” But like they say, with great power comes responsibility.
Depending blindly on ChatGPT can be detrimental to the overall screening and hiring process. This is why, at iPlace, we have extensive training programs dedicated to finding the right balance between AI (artificial intelligence) and NI (natural intelligence) and fine-tuning ChatGPT’s usage by our recruiters to ensure it is used wisely and not blindly.
Companies across various industries are already upgrading to ChatGPT, benefiting from its implementation in their recruitment strategies. This includes saving screening time, reducing unconscious bias, and improving the quality of hires. As AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more advanced and tailored solutions to emerge, further enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of recruitment processes.
